Despite a self-financing rate of over 60% – which is very high even by national standards – the Schloss Ahrensburg Foundation remains dependent on external support, as its capital base (2019: €1.653 million) is insufficient to finance day-to-day operations from interest income. And it is not only these costs that must be covered, but also the maintenance of the castle and park and all associated obligations.

The Town of Ahrensburg
(voting member of the Supervisory Board)

As a founding member and co-donor, the City of Ahrensburg supports the Foundation both in investment projects and in its day-to-day operations. In 2013, for instance, it undertook the dredging of the entire outer moat at a cost of €597,000, contributed to the renovation of the castle park in 2014 (total cost €284,000) and the final renovation work inside the building (total cost €1.175 million). The town also supports day-to-day operations by covering any shortfall, although this is not contractually binding.

Sparkasse Holstein Foundations
(voting member of the Supervisory Board)

As a founding member and co-donor, Sparkasse Holstein, together with its savings bank foundations, supports the foundation both in investment projects and in its day-to-day operations; furthermore, the establishment of the Sparkassenstiftung Schloss Ahrensburg created a dedicated funding instrument. It contributed to the renovation of the castle grounds in 2014 (total budget €284,000) and the final phase of renovation work inside the building (total budget €1.175 million). It has also funded numerous individual projects.

The State of Schleswig-Holstein
(voting member of the Supervisory Board)

As a co-donor, the State of Schleswig-Holstein supports the Foundation in its investment projects. In 2009, for instance, it financed the façade renovation through the ‘Cultural Heritage Investment Programme’; two further renovation measures inside the castle in the years 2010–2012 were funded from the same programme, with a total budget of €1.16 million.

Federal Republic of Germany

The Federal Government contributed to the last major renovation project at the palace as part of the Special Monument Protection Programme V (total budget €1,175 million). This was made possible because Ahrensburg Palace is a cultural monument of national importance.

 Other friends and supporters

Alongside these ‘big six’, companies, associations and private individuals who have supported the foundation for many years since its inception also play a major and important role. It would be beyond the scope of this text to name all the friends of the castle here, whether through a substantial donation or a private collection to mark an anniversary: All these supporters contribute in their own way to ensuring that Ahrensburg Castle is preserved and remains a living historical site and an attractive destination for the town and far beyond its borders.

The Friends' Association

As a founding member, the Friends’ Association supports the Foundation in a variety of ways. The Friends’ Association is a reliable partner, particularly when it comes to restoration work, funding projects and exhibitions, acquisitions, and new purchases for both the castle and the castle grounds. Another key focus is the promotion of educational activities for children and young people. Since its foundation in 1992, the Friends’ Association has supported a wide range of projects with a total budget of around €560,000. In addition, it organises concerts in the castle, provides support through voluntary work and carries out important ‘networking’ through its members in the town.

Anyone interested is warmly invited to become a member of this non-profit association!
